Psychiatrist Volunteers for Disaster Relief: UPDATE

The Texas Society of Psychiatric Physicians' is assisting in the coordination of efforts and call for volunteers to assist in the Louisiana Disaster Relief. We wish to thank the many TSPP members who responded to our initial Disaster Relief Alert on Tuesday morning by contacting the Texas Department of State Health Services to volunteer for deployment to Louisiana. As events have changed since early Tuesday morning, we are providing the following updates for members wishing to volunteer.

UPDATE HOUSTON:

Dr. Avrim Fishkind, Medical Director, NeuroPsychiatric Center in Houston has been placed in charge of emergency psychiatric assessments at the Astrodome beginning 9AM, September 1. He is in need of all volunteer psychiatrists willing to do assessments between the hours of 7AM and 12 midnight for a period of probably the next 2 weeks.

Any interested psychiatrist volunteers should call Dr. Fishkind's cell phone at 713-398-1094. Upon arrival at the Astrodome, please inform the gate attendants that you are a volunteer and proceed on to the Medical Clinic in Astro Arena #D. You may park within the hall. For those unfamiliar with the Astrodome, Astro Arena #D is the oldest building closest to the freeway.

UPDATE STATE:

The Texas Medical Association is now coordinating efforts with Gov. Rick Perry's Department of Emergency Management to arrange for Texas physicians to travel to Louisiana or to help with the thousands of storm refugees who are coming to Texas.

If you are willing to help and would like to volunteer your services, please contact TMA's public health director, Gayle Love, at gayle.love@texmed.org or visit the TMA website www.texmed.org

Thank you,
